The owners are going to claim years of experience but the immigration laws change regularly and often they arent up to speed.

Watch out for multiple claims of expertise, they are NOT borne out by fact.

You might well have to add on the cost of a barrister or lawyer as well as exorbitant fees that visa specialists charge.

Watch out for claims of large numbers of staff employed, one could be for applications and 10 for complaints.

Whether to use an agent to help you prepare a visa application or not is a personal choice. Most applications are straightforward and with a little time and effort spent on research most people are capable of preparing the application themselves but there may be complications such as a previous refusal to consider. So, one may decide to use an agent to help and advise.

Be careful! Avoid agents who claim to have a 'special relationship' with the embassy or have influence over the decision; they don't.

Avoid agents who claim to guarantee a visa, they can't!. No agent can guarantee a visa as the decision is not theirs to make and they have no influence whatsoever over the various embassies. The applicant either qualifies for the visa applied for or they don't; and if they don't there is nothing any agent can do to change that.

Be wary of agents who offer a 'no visa, no fee' service. Some reputable agents now offer this, but will only take on clients if they are confident that the application will be successful. A dodgy agent will take anyone on, and if you are refused will point to something in the small print which means you don't qualify for this! Make sure you understand the terms and conditions and any restrictions on this service before handing over any money. I have heard that some 'agents' who 'guarantee' a visa and say no fee until the visa is received will, if the application is refused, hold onto the applicant's passport until their fee is paid! Remember that even if the agent refunds their fee, you will still have to pay the visa application fee and any other costs charged by the embassy or visa application centre.

Remember that wearing a suit and having a professional looking website is no guarantee of competence.

Watch out for membership of fake governing bodies. Some will claim they are registered with meaningless organisations to cover their own sordid reputation. One website says "Registered migration agents with the I.I.L.A and E.G.C 'The embassies Governing Council'" ...Embassies dont have a governing council other than their countries governments for example.
